3. DISTRIBUTION:
6. END-OF-LIFE
The distribution phase in the textile industry
involves the transportation of 昀椀nished
products from manufacturing facilities
to retailers, warehouses, or directly to
consumers. This stage has a notable
environmental impact, primarily due to
energy consumption, emissions from
transportation, and the resources required
for storage.
Examination of waste management,
recycling, or disposal processes.
SMI’s own brand ROKWEAR is
manufactured in several countries
worldwide and shipped to our distribution
centre in Fareham by shipping containers.
Textile dyeing, especially when using
conventional methods, can lead to
wastewater pollution due to chemical runo昀昀.
This waste may contain harmful substances
like heavy metals, non-biodegradable dyes,
and toxic chemicals.
Solutions:
• Adoption of closed-loop dyeing systems
that recycle water and chemicals used
in the process.
• Using eco-friendly dyes and
昀椀nishes that are less harmful to the
environment.
4. STORAGE &
WAREHOUSING:
Energy use in warehousing: Large
warehouses used for storing textiles require
signi昀椀cant energy for lighting, climate
control, and inventory management systems.
In regions with extreme climates, heating or
cooling can dramatically increase energy
consumption.
Inventory management: Overstocking and
unsold inventory contribute to unnecessary
transportation and storage costs.
Additionally, unsold textiles often end up as
waste, especially if they are not made from
recyclable or biodegradable materials.
5. USAGE
The operational phase of a product’s life
cycle refers to the period during which the
product is in use by the consumer or end
user. This phase is a critical component of
the Product LCA as it often has the greatest
environmental impact, particularly in terms
of energy consumption, water usage, and
other resource demands. Textiles garments
involve activities such as wearing, washing,
drying, and potentially repairing or altering
the garment.
