THE FOUR PHASES OF LCA
1
De昀椀ning the Goal and Scope:
This phase sets the boundaries for what the business wants to measure and the scope of the LCA.
2
Life Cycle Inventory (LCI):
In this phase, all the inputs and outputs of the product are collected.
• Inputs include materials and energy used during production.
• Outputs focus on the use and disposal processes.
Example 昀氀owchart to demonstrate this process using raw materials like cotton, polyester,
and leather in SMI products, with a split between waste and recycled materials.
3
Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA):
This phase evaluates the signi昀椀cant impacts of the product using environmental indicators, such as:
• Environmental cost indicators
• Global warming potential (CO2-equivalent in kg), and others.
4
Interpretation:
According to ISO 14044:2006, this phase involves:
• Identifying signi昀椀cant issues based on the LCI and LCIA.
• Evaluating the completeness and consistency of the analysis.
• Providing conclusions, limitations, and recommendations.
