NAVIGATING THE SCOPES:
A REPORTING GUIDE FOR
SUSTAINABILITY
WHAT IS THIS AND HOW IT CAN HELP
YOUR ORGANISATION
Scope reporting is the way businesses
categories their Green House Gases (GHG) in
line with the GHG protocol which helps them
to measure, understand and manage their
emissions.
Greenhouse Gas Protocol is a metric for
measuring a business’s total carbon emissions,
providing a standard, guidance, tools and
training for business and governments to
evaluate and manage climate-warming
emissions.
GREEN HOUSE GASES:
The gases that contribute most to the Earth’s
greenhouse e昀昀ect are:
• Water vapour (H2O)
• Carbon dioxide (CO2)
• Nitrous oxide(N2O)
• Methane (CH4)
• Per昀氀uorocarbons (PFCs)
• Sulphur hexa昀氀uoride (SF6)
• Nitrogen tri昀氀uoride (NF3)

There are 15 activities divided across 3 scopes
which categorise the di昀昀erent types of carbon
emissions a business creates, looking at an
operational level and its wider value chain.
Scope 1 refers to the direct emissions such as
the organisations premises whilst 2 and 3 refer
to the indirect emissions such as purchased
energy in scope 2 and remaining emissions
associated with the value chain in scope 3.
