SMI: RESPONSIBLE SUSTAINABLE PARTNER STRATEGY 2025
RESPECT & UPHOLD HUMAN
RIGHTS
Committing to combating modern slavery, the
violation of human rights and corruption within our
value chain.
In line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business
and Human Rights (UNGPS), the Ethical Trading
Initiative Base Code, and 11 of the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), SMI is dedicated to
upholding internationally recognised human rights. This
commitment is re昀氀ected in our RSPS and supporting
documents, including the Supplier Code of Conduct,
Code of Ethics, Child Labour and Young Worker Policy,
and Migrant Agency Worker Policy.
Our approach is based on the International Bill of
Human Rights and relevant labour standards from the
International Labour Organization (ILO).
Transparency is at the core of what SMI stands for,
promoting and delivering equality, diversity and
inclusion in the workplace. We are committed to
昀椀ghting corruption in all its forms, carrying out nondiscriminatory practices during the recruitment stage
and across all employment practices.
SMI ensures that all workers across our value chain
have safe and healthy working conditions that are free
of modern slavery, harassment, violence, abuse or any
conditions that could have cause to their physical or
mental health.
TACKLING CLIMATE
CHANGE & PROTECTING THE
ENVIRONMENT & ITS PEOPLE
SMI’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
strategy is centered on protecting and preserving
the environment through decarbonisation across our
supply chain and business operations. This includes
conserving energy and water, managing waste and
chemicals responsibly, reducing plastic consumption
and recognising our responsibility to tackle biodiversity
and deforestation (refer to our Biodiversity Policy for
further details).
SMI’s key practices can be divided across our
operations: sourcing, manufacturing, distribution and
disposal of our products.
The 昀椀ve key areas SMI will be focusing on
throughout the implementation of our RSPS to
reduce our environmental impact include:
• Protecting and restoring biodiversity
• A昀昀orestation
• Reducing pollutants
• Minimising waste
• Utilising materials which have a positive impact
on the environment
Driving due diligence processes through our RSPS
includes regular human rights and business ethics
assessments that are conducted externally, self-run
as well as by a third party. These assessments are
monitored, reported and any risks that are identi昀椀ed
are addressed through our prevention and corrective
measures strategies.
Our RSPS emphasises that collaboration with our
business partners is crucial to the success of reducing
our environmental impact across each of these key
practices. SMI is committed to working closely with all
of our stakeholders in order to achieve our sustainability
goals, and in order to ensure meaningful and positive
change on the environment.
Communication is a key aspect of the RSPS,
emphasising transparent dialogue on progress,
challenges, and actions. This ensures that our team and
partners receive the necessary training to understand
and uphold our expectations and values when it comes
to working with businesses that are committed to value
chain integrity.
Our supply chain accounts for a signi昀椀cant percentage
of our emissions footprint (95%+), therefore
collaboration with our partners is essential. As part of
our decarbonisation strategy, we have pledged to be
net zero by 2050 in line with the UK government, setting
scope reduction targets:
• Scope 1-2 by 90%
• Scope 3 by 60%
(Established from the 2022 baseline calculated in
2023)
