SMI: RESPONSIBLE SUSTAINABLE PARTNER STRATEGY 2025
HOW TO OPTIMISE
TRANSPORTATION MODES
Choose transportation modes that are more energye昀케cient and have lower carbon emissions, for example:
• Sea freight: If feasible, opt for sea freight for longdistance shipments, as it has a lower carbon footprint
per ton-mile compared to air freight.
• Rail and inland waterways: Consider using rail or
inland waterways for inland transportation, which can
be more fuel-e昀케cient than road transportation.
• Consolidate shipments: Combine multiple shipments
to reduce the overall number of transport trips and
increase cargo capacity.
SMI’S RSPS ROADMAP
As part of our RSPS Phase One, we are committed
to ensuring that 85% of our suppliers calculate their
emissions and align with science based targets or
equivalent by the end of 2026.
We expect that by the end of 2026, all business partners
will publicly commit to setting long-term reduction
targets focused on SMI’s 昀椀ve core environmental areas
as outlined in this RSPS and will con昀椀rm these targets
with us.
Within two years of committing to their reduction
targets, each business partner will be required to
annually calculate their emissions across all relevant
categories in scopes 1, 2 and 3 (with all relevant
purchased goods, services and product scope data
supplied to SMI upon request).
The Second Phase involves working with our suppliers
to reduce environmental impacts across our supply
chain, with a particular focus on products, packaging
and the logistics of our business partners’ imports and
exports.
Phase Three involves our business partners completing
SMI’s responsible sourcing and sustainable selfassessments, mapping their supply chain across
component tier partners and completing the
responsible/ethical questionnaire.
SMI has set a target to have 100%
of supply chain partners complete
our self-assessment by the end of
2026.
Phase Four involves setting non-negotiable conditions
that require adherence to the expectations and
targets outlined in the RSPS, both when onboarding
new business partners and assessing existing ones.
Necessary changes are then implemented in good faith
to achieve these goals, considering all three pillars of
our RSPS where relevant.
Phase Five involves our business partners completing
and providing evidence of their latest Ecovadis score
rating.
Aligned with our RSPS, SMI completed our 昀椀rst
Ecovadis assessment in 2023 and have committed to
continuing this assessment annually.
