ENVIRONMENTAL
SUSTAINABILITY
We aim to help the planet we all share
through our environmental efforts. The
textile industry being the second largest
contributor to global warming making
up 10% of the global gas emissions, SMI
acknowledges the importance of adopting
a green way of thinking. We are investing in
core areas of the business to begin reducing
our negative impact on the environment.
This includes focusing on reducing our
paper and water consumption, cutting the
plastic packaging for our products, using
green energy, and extending our products
lifespan through recycling and repurposing.
Employee commuting is a key contributor
to many companies’ emissions, making up a
large percentage of their carbon footprint.
We have taken steps to reduce the emissions
associated with commuting, mapping our
staff’s locations to our new Head Office in
Petersfield where the average distance is 8
miles. We also encourage our staff to partake
in our car sharing scheme and our bike to
work scheme to help reduce our emissions. We
have also implemented hybrid working across
all levels which has saved on commuting
each week.
Distribution Service SMI have proudly
worked with DPD for years. DPD is one of the
greenest delivery services within the market,
dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint
where possible and have made great strides
towards becoming net zero. DPD are set
to switch all diesel HGVs to renewable
biofuel by the end of 2023, reducing carbon
emission across the 1,600 HGVs fleet by
87%. They have successfully completed an
estimated 26,328,028 green deliveries, saved
over 7,000,3000 CO2e (kg) and planted over
35,890 trees. DPD’s journey in sustainable
delivery positively impacts our customers
carbon footprint. DPD have committed to
zero emissions deliveries in thirty locations,
covering 25% of the UK by the end of 2023
and reducing an estimated 42,000 tonnes of
carbon emissions.
Vehicle fleet SMI has invested in electric
vehicles, including fitting charging points
at both of our sites, encouraging members
of staff to switch to hybrid or electric cars
and operating all electric forklifts at our
warehouse site.
