A MESSAGE FROM OUR
ESG OFFICER
Welcome to our environmental, social and
governance (ESG) strategy 2030.
of our business offer SMI opportunities to align
action and activities with stakeholders’ interests.
Sustainability has often been associated with the
butterfly effect, in essence sustainability should
follow the notion that any small change can make
a significant difference. This is embodied in SMI
approach to embracing sustainability, we feel a
very strong sense of responsibility to take action
and help preserve our planet one step at a time.
We are committed to taking responsibility for our
ecological footprint and create greater long-term
benefits for our stakeholders, strengthening our
journey net zero by 2050. SMI business activities
have been aligned to respond to scientific advice,
with changes made to our operations to react to the
need to keep temperature changes at a maximum
of 1.5 degrees. We have set an emission reduction
target and are reviewing our supply chain and
products to ensure responsible decisions are made.
The emphasis on enforcing these changes across our
business operations are not lost at SMI. As we move
forward on our journey, each step we take will be
influenced by responsible and sustainable decisions.
Strengthening our commitment to delivering
excellent service to our customers and implement
positive change in the world. Targeting our value
chain emissions is the focus for SMI over the next few
years. The importance of this is to provide SMI with
the opportunity to join the global collaboration to
reduce emissions and meet our sustainability target.
In all aspects of life environmental, social and
governance (ESG) has become a key focus, going
beyond sustainability, and concentrating on social
and governance aspects, alongside environmental
factors. This has been driven by the push for social
change by equality movements; alongside the rise in
global temperature and other visible environmental
damage.
The first step as a business we took in 2022
involved launching our Sustainability Department
to ensure we had a dedicated and passionate
team to help SMI on our journey. Our new ESG
Officer Elizabeth Mellor (Lizzie) is responsible for
embedding ESG practises into SMI’s everyday
activities, supporting our stakeholders and
achieving our own sustainable goals. Lizzie studied
Management with Sustainability at University,
completing a placement year, and finishing with
a first BSc degree. Lizzie joined SMI in September
2020 as a member of the Customer Experience
Team. Her in-depth knowledge and understanding
